Plans for an Adaptation of the Project

Two plans are underway to adapt A PLACE OF OUR OWN to other locations.

The Scotts Valley Branch is undergoing renovations and expansion and will include an electronic homework center. Located within walking distance of a middle school (grades 6, 7, 8), the small storefront branch is frequently overrun with young people when school is out. The branch seems to be an excellent place to form another Teen Advisory Council, and encourage more Young Friends participation. A needs assessment specific to the Scotts Valley young adult community is planned.

Additionally, the Library system has the opportunity to work with the Santa Cruz City Beach Flats Neighborhood Staff Committee to share information and address issues concerning the redevelopment of this mostly Spanish-speaking area. Library Youth Services proposes to establish a presence in the area using the PLACE OF OUR OWN model and its contacts with the local Resources for Youth, a statewide violence prevention initiative. Again, youth participation will be emphasized.

When these projects are established, efforts will be made to bring the TAC's from each location together from time to time to meet with library youth services staff.
